Toward a Larger Freedom

Toward A Larger Freedom

Toward A Larger Freedom highlights the vital role everyday citizens play in strengthening democracy. Together Baton Rouge is a broad-based coalition of organizations working to address community problems. In 2021, a team of young Together Baton Rouge leaders recorded oral histories with their mentors. This project creates an interactive historical record of local grassroots organizing by combining these narratives with a series of portraits made by Lily Brooks.

For this project I designed branding, print materials, and the exhibition’s layout. I began with establishing a style, color palette, and logo. Along with the logo came multiple handouts, a periodical, a website, and social media content. I also worked with the oral historians to create a guide of QR codes that were used to access the audio recordings of these community leaders.

Not only does the exhibit highlight the organizers of Together Baton Rouge, but it also highlights some of the victories won by their work from over the years.

The oral histories, recorded by Abel Thompson, Maggie Conarro and Phillip Norman, alongside the portraits made by Lily Brooks, create an interactive historical record of non-partisan and grassroots organizing in Baton Rouge. Those recordings and photos will be archived in the East Baton Rouge Public Library. You can hear their stories here: www.towardalargerfreedom.com
